🎯 Goal
In this article, you'll learn how to apply editing restrictions to specific columns within a template’s management view. This feature ensures that only authorized users or roles can edit certain information.
This article includes the following sections:
🔍 What is a column restriction?
A column restriction lets you control who is allowed to edit data in sensitive or critical areas of a document. By restricting editing, you ensure that only pre-authorized individuals can make changes, avoiding mistakes and keeping information consistent.
Â
⚙️ How to apply a column restriction
1. Locate the column to be restricted
-
Open the document or template;
-
In the management table, identify the column you want to restrict.
2. Apply the restriction
-
Click the dropdown (options menu) in the desired column.
-
From the menu, select the Restrict editing option.
3. Add more people
-
Once the option is selected, the restriction is immediately applied to the column.
You are automatically added to the restriction list, ensuring your own access isn’t blocked.
-
The restriction management window will stay open, allowing you to add more users or roles who should have editing rights.
-
A lock icon will appear in the column, indicating that editing is restricted.
✨ Here’s how it looks after restriction is applied:

âť“ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Do restricted edits respect each user's access profile?
Yes. If a user only has “read-only” access to the management area, they won’t be able to edit anything. On the other hand, users with “edit” access can generally make changes — except for columns that have editing restrictions, as explained in this article.
2. Who can manage the restriction?
All users included in the restriction list have equal control. Any of them can add new users, remove existing ones, or even remove the restriction altogether.
3. Are restrictions from a template carried over to documents?
Yes, any restriction applied in a template will be carried over to documents generated from that template. However, the reverse is not true: once a document is created, it becomes independent. So, changing the restriction in a generated document won’t impact the template or any other documents.
